Celebrate National Coffee Day with these specialties at local coffee shops
There are two types of people: those who can get through the day without coffee, and those who can’t.
National Coffee Day is Sept. 29, so the 225 team is celebrating local coffee shops and the drinks they’re known for. Coffee and gelato? Check. Espresso shots? Of course. Frozen coffee? Duh. Anyone can make a standard hot coffee or cold brew, but these standouts shine for their roasting preparation and methods, attention to technique and drinks that differ from the norm.
Here’s where to get something other than the standard cup of joe around Baton Rouge:

La Divina Gelateria
La Divina may be the go-to spot for authentic and exciting gelato flavors, but its Italian-inspired coffee is the stuff dreams are made of. Try the affogato: a double shot of espresso with a two ounce scoop of gelato in the mug. We won’t judge.
French Truck Coffee
While only recently opened, French Truck Coffee has already proved to be a serious contender in the Capital City coffee scene. Walk in any time on a normal day and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a seat in the packed joint. French Truck’s shakerato, or espresso poured over ice in a sugar-rimmed glass, is bold, rich and a guaranteed kick for the caffeine die-hards out there. Plus, that sugar rim makes it look sorta like a cocktail.
Garden District Coffee
We can’t pass up ordering an icy sweet granita during a visit to this tucked away Perkins Road gem. Strong and not too sugary, the granita at Garden District Coffee packs a punch as one of the most caffeinated items on the menu.
Magpie Cafe
Third wave coffee is now a thing in Baton Rouge, and Magpie Cafe is partly responsible. We recommend The Roosevelt, a Magpie creation that’s part iced coffee, part espresso, making for a frothy, creamy cold drink.
Brew Ha-Ha!
Brew Ha-Ha! owner Gabby Loubiere is known for her homemade cake balls. You can’t get a coffee from the Mid City shop and not order a cake ball along with it. Why not get one that tastes like coffee as well? The coffee cake ball is a must-try (along with every other flavor on the menu).
What’s your go-to coffee order? Tell us in the comments!
