Who’s your doggy (daddy)?

Owners who believe there may be a wrinkle in their dog’s designer genes can now iron out the issue with a $60 DNA breed identification kit. By analyzing a sample of the dog’s cheek cells swabbed by the owner, BioPet Vet Lab compares each pet’s unique DNA to the genetic profile of 65 breeds.

When Gulf South Golden Retriever Rescue recently fostered this rescued golden girl named Texas and her five newborn puppies, potential adopters asked about the father. BioPet indicated their ancestry included 37% to 74% golden retriever and 10% to 19% each German shepherd, poodle and Weimaraner.

The results are fascinating, but not necessarily conclusive. The Knoxville company tests only for American Kennel Club breeds, so common Louisiana canines—such as pit bull and Catahoula—are eliminated as potential matches. Still, if pet owners suspect their beagle mix’s behavior borders on Border collie or their Morkie is morphing into a mastiff, the kit provides a clue as to whether they’re barking up the right furry family tree.
