Singer-songwriter Josh Ritter, who stopped at the Manship Theatre in June, is known for using metaphors to craft a catchy tune. On his latest album, The Beast In Its Tracks, Ritter dug into a new subject—his personal life. The album is a chronicle of the time after his divorce, in which he found a silver lining and delivered what he calls “his proudest moment” yet.

When not writing songs, Ritter is, well, writing longer passages. In 2012, he published Bright’s Passage, which follows Henry Bright as he travels home after World War I. When 225 asked Ritter what he’s reading, he answered with Patrick deWitt’s The Sisters Brothers.

“It’s easily one of the finest books I’ve read recently,” Ritter says. “It’s this beautiful, awesome, weird Western. deWitt is an incredible writer. It’s such an amazing book.” Read the interview.
