Well Suited: Dead Poet’s Society
Set in the late 1950s, Dead Poet’s Society is a visual inspiration for all things plaid and preppy. The story line is all about self-discovery and breaking from the mold, challenging yourself to be more than expected. The characters’ defiance requires them to grow throughout the film and understand that life is about ceasing life each moment and looking at life through new lenses.
This outfit honors the uniform of the characters’ costumes while not looking as though I stepped out of school… except maybe the library. A 1970s midi skirt is a good change to my usual short or long silhouettes. A wool skirt is essential to any woman’s closet! It is lightweight enough to sport bare legs on a mild day, but heavy enough to keep you warm on a cold day with tights. The mohair element of this skirt makes it a little different from other plaid skirts I have found. It’s the little additions that make special pieces like this skirt stand out. Paired with a basic cream turtleneck sweater, vintage-inspired brogues, and my old school uniform belt, the featured piece is well-framed. Add the tiniest of vintage bags and an old pair of cat-eyes and you’re set to stand on top of a desk and exclaim, “O Captain, my Captain!”
