Wash and learn – Washed Out plays at the Spanish Moon tonight

From recording his Internet sensation Life of Leisure while living at his parents’ home in rural Perry, Georgia, to touring the world with a rock band that includes his wife Blair on keyboards, the CNN- and Portlandia-approved success of Ernest Greene, who records and performs as Washed Out, has been a family affair.

“Luckily for me, she’s a great musician,” Greene says of his wife. “We got married right when Life of Leisure hit. She’s been with me the whole way on this ride, and I can’t imagine touring without her. There’s a lot of non-verbal interaction when you play live, and on stage we can read each other with a look.”

Washed Out’s latest is Within and Without, a lush blend of bedroom beats, gauzy melodies and starry synths that is drawing new ears and fresh feet to the supple chillwave genre that has crowned Greene its Southern king.

“I never set out to make dance music,” Greene admits. “But it does seem to appeal to lots of types of people, and it’s fun to see those different people intersect at our shows.”
