Walk under chalk
Every month artist Jay Michael climbs to the top of his fold-out ladder to layer the more than 300 square feet of space above the entrance to The Varsity Theatre with his inventive, late 1960s West Coast-inspired chalk art. The venue’s own modern Michelangelo, Michael does a lot more with his work than bark the names of upcoming performers. He evokes the spirit of a bygone era, one engineered by promoter Bill Graham and presided over by Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds and The Grateful Dead. The Varsity, Chelsea’s Café and Fred’s have also commissioned the Baton Rouge artist for large-scale wall and ceiling frescos. Visit flyrightstudios.com for more of Michael’s work.
