Tree envy

On Nov. 3 the Crimson Tide arrives in Tigerland. Perhaps tailgaters and school officials should keep close watch on the campus’ beloved oak trees.

Everyone has heard of the video of the Alabama fan assaulting a passed-out LSU supporter after the BCS National Championship in New Orleans—the alleged attacker was indicted for sexual assault and obscenity—but apparently not even an opponent’s foliage is safe when the Tide comes in. Last season an Alabama fan was accused of poisoning Auburn’s cherished Toomer’s Corner oak trees. That trial is set to begin this month.

LSU’s campus is home to more than 1,200 live oak trees. The university maintains an endowment to care for and protect the trees, and donations can be made at liveoaks.lsu.edu.
