Tour for life makes a Capital City connection

This weekend, East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control and several local rescues are participating in what is being billed as “the World’s Largest Cooperative Pet Adoption Event.”

Since 2001, North Shore Animal League, a New York-based no-kill adoption and rescue center, has staged an annual Tour for Life® to promote and importance of saving a life by adopting a shelter animals and the advantages shelter animals provide as lifelong companions. To spread that message across the country, two mobile adoption units are traveling across the country and partnering with more than 100 shelters and rescue groups in 37 cities in 19 states at a variety of adoption events.

For the first time, East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control (EBRACC) has become a whistle stop on the non-profit’s 13,000-mile, awareness campaign trail.

On April 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Tour for Life hosts an adopt-a-thon at EBRACC’s Progress Road facility across from the airport. Besides the Tour for Life mobile adoption unit, APAWS, CAAWS, SOS, Friends of the Animals, Cat Haven, Spay Baton Rouge, Yelp!BR, Project Purr, Northside Humane Society and several local breed rescues will offer information and adorable animals for adoption.

In addition, there are activities for Capital City canines and their companions including best dressed and stupid pet tricks contests, pet photos and low-cost microchipping. The event also features obedience and agility demonstrations, police dog presentations and tours of EBRACC facility.

“My hope is [for events like this] to change the public’s negative perception about Animal Control,” explains Jodi Golden, a Friends of the Animals shelter volunteer. “If we make EBRACC a family friendly place, people will realize they can find the next love of life in a shelter animal. The more we improve the attitude, the more lives can be saved.”
