The other ‘9’

The future is dark and made of burlap in Shane Acker’s post-apocalyptic animated adventure 9 (not to be confused with the new Daniel Day Lewis film in currently in theatres). When tiny mechanical doll named 9 wakes up in a world torn apart following a climactic battle between humans and machines, he accidentally discovers a small enclave of others like him, who are on the run from giant, ruthless machines trying to root them out. As these small creatures eke out an existence they must decipher why the machines want them destroyed and go on the offensive to save civilization from complete extinction. Elijah Wood voices 9, with Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau and John C. Riley also contributing to this engrossing fairytale noir. Rated PG-13.
