“I don’t care if you have the cutest sandals in the world, closed-toe shoes are a must if you’re planning to hit the Perkins Road Overpass area to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Definitely co-host, join or crash a house party along the route. There is a great camaraderie among neighbors for this parade, and doing so will to guarantee you a clean bathroom and a stocked fridge.

“Once the parade is over, walk to Parrain’s for lunch. Yes, it’s a hike, but one fueled by libations and no shortage of fun. Then make your way to Ivar’s for live music. Walk around to the back patio, hit up the bar and dance the afternoon away.”

“If you are in a big group—and that is the most fun way to experience Mardi Gras in New Orleans—pick a home base in case you get separated in the crowds. For this, I like Fat Harry’s uptown. It’s on the parade route along St. Charles. It’s easy to find, and pretty much every cab driver knows how to get there. They have food, drinks and a bathroom to use, which is always a plus.”

“Mardi Gras is not just a day off of work. It is rooted in the traditions and ancestry of our great state. So, rural Acadiana is probably the most direct and fun way to answer the question of just how did this crazy place known as Louisiana come to be. Do yourself a favor and participate in an authentic Courir de Mardi Gras. For the last few years I’ve been attending in Eunice, though this Carnival celebration can be found in several small communities across Louisiana’s Cajun prairie. So cover your faces, chase a chicken and leave the beads at home.”

SPANISH TOWN

“First, be prepared, rain or shine. Shrimp boots are always a stylish fit no matter your costume or clothing. Making buddies with someone in the neighborhood is essential so you can use their facilities and have a home base. And don’t forget to arrive early so you can catch a glimpse of Baton Rouge’s all-female, all-dancing parade staple, the Baby Cakes, strutting and representing for Mardi Gras.”
