That dude with the Delorean – Going ‘Back to the Future’ in Baton Rouge
Local videographer and photographer Drew Guillory isn’t obsessed with Back to the Future as much as he’s in love with the film’s time machine: a short-lived automotive relic from the early 1980s called a DeLorean. You might have seen Guillory’s ride around town. Local social media accounts are peppered with “Marty McFly” sightings and pictures of the modified car.
“When I first saw the movie as a kid, and the time machine rolled out of the back of the truck, I thought it was the coolest,” Guillory says. “That was my dream car. I told myself, ‘One day, I’m going to own a DeLorean.'”
In 2009, this dream came true. After an extensive eBay search, he found a 1983 DeLorean DMC in Alabama. To his surprise, it was in good shape, and at $13,000, he won the bid.
“When I picked it up, it wasn’t the first time I’d seen one, but it was the first time I’d ridden in one,” he says. “It rides so low, and it’s very wide. You’re crammed in it. There’s not much space inside. It felt like I was inside a tank.”
The DeLorean is his only method of transport, but a stock version wouldn’t do. No, Guillory wanted the DeLorean. Over time, the 26-year-old bought all the interior and exterior accessories to get the full effect of the time machine that transports Marty McFly back to 1955 and beyond.
“The first thing I did was buy a flux capacitor,” Guillory says. “A family friend from Eunice built the big black vents on the outside. Once those were on, I started adding a lot of the surrounding parts. There were a lot of trips to Home Depot and Lowe’s.”
But it was worth it. Driving around town, he feels like a local celebrity, making passers-by do double-takes.
“People are always slamming on their brakes,” he says. “They want to check it out. They hang out their windows with their camera phones. There are more DeLorean owners around than people think. You just don’t see them that often. It’s a rare sight.”
