Surrounded with Sounds

Thanks for checking out Surround Sounds, 225‘s local music blog. It’s almost cliché now to describe how important music is to the Louisiana culture. From Cajun country to the Delta, homegrown artists have kept the state going during times of triumph and tragedy.

With Surround Sounds, I hope to tell you about the best of the region’s musical offerings. Be sure to check this blog regularly for the best in weekend show listings in the Baton Rouge area, reviews of the latest local music releases and any interesting news coming from area musicians ranging from indie rock to blues to hip-hop, or to the strange experimental yodeling garage-rock band your neighbor begs you to check out.

I remember when I first arrived in the Baton Rouge area, as an idealistic freshman at LSU some five years ago, and craving to know what the coolest bands were in town and where I could go see them on the weekend. I’m hoping to help that next generation of music fans looking for something to do outside of Tigerland, and to show Baton Rouge that good local music does exist in a variety of forms.

Be sure to pick up the latest 225, where our Pop-up Think Tank suggests 11 ways to improve Baton Rouge. Several ideas—a Southern Routes music festival, hosting artists-in-residence, launching citywide art projects—would help turn Baton Rouge into a competitive, culturally rich and modern Southern city. The city has a lot to offer and this blog hopes to spotlight what it can.

If you’ve got an ahnvee for good music, Surround Sounds will help you out, so check back soon and check in often.
