Students of the year

We can’t take all—okay, any—of the credit, but former 225 job-shadower Alise Alexander was recently named one of six senior finalists for Louisiana Student of the Year. The St. Joseph’s Class of 2012 graduate is headed to Furman University in Greenville, S.C., and her outlook on education should inspire students returning this month to classrooms across Baton Rouge.

“I view being a student as more than showing up for class and excelling in those classes,” Alexander says. “It’s being an engaged member of the school community inside and outside of the classroom.”

As a Louisiana Diocesan Student of the Year, AP Honors Student, state medalist for Mathematics, member of the Catholic High Bruinettes dance team and Editor-in-Chief of Student Prints, the SJA student-run newspaper—all by her sophomore year—Alexander says her favorite teachers encouraged her to achieve her very best.

“They both saw that their jobs as teachers extended beyond the classroom and beyond the subject matter they were assigned to teach,” she says.
