‘Stranger’ things have happened

Woody Allen’s new relationship comedy You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger finally arrives in stores this week. Playing up the supernatural bent the director has been flirting with lately (see: Scoop), Allen’s cast includes a gaggle of dysfunctional characters trying and failing to make sense of their careers, their romances and ultimately, their lives. A London fortune teller ties these disparate threads together as two marriages crumble—Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin, and Sir Anthony Hopkins and Gemma Jones—while others maneuver to pick up the pieces, like Antonio Banderas and Slumdog Millionaire’s Freida Pinto. But when they all discover their sage is a charlatan, what happens next? Pauline Collins and Lucy Punch co-star. Rated R.
