‘Starving the South’ at Old Governor’s Mansion
In his new book, Starving the South: How the North Won the Civil War, food scholar Andrew Smith takes an in-depth look at the war from a unique perspective: food production and distribution. Smith will lecture and sign his new book this Thursday at the Old Governor’s Mansion, and chronicle the devastation wrought by the Union blockade and the cutoff of Northern agricultural trade on the South, whose farm economy was based on cotton and tobacco. A reception will be held at noon, and the lecture will begin at 12:30 p.m. Free and open to the public. Visit fhl.org for more information.
