Sips: In the mix
Having just opened a few months ago, Olive or Twist is turning heads with its long list of complex and inventive cocktails. And we’re not exaggerating when we say long. Divided into sections like Specialty Cocktails, New Orleans Cocktails, Drop Martinis, Dessert Martinis and more, it’s easy to get lost in the menu’s maze of concoctions. But when the bartenders take the time to smack basil leaves between their palms a few times before adding the garnish to a drink (it releases the oils), you know you’re in good hands.
On a recent visit, we tried two drinks based on Manager Scott Gremillion’s suggestions. The first was the Blackberry Sage ($9), a fruity cocktail with muddled blackberries that was somewhat weak, even though the main ingredient was spiced moonshine. The addition of sage and molasses gave it a distinctive earthy quality, but the overall taste still fell back on the litany of citrus juices involved.
The second and far tastier option was the Bulleit Proof ($9), which expertly balanced Bulleit Bourbon, hibiscus and rose hip liqueurs, lime juice, Angostura bitters and simple syrup. Though its ingredients might sound dainty, rest assured the bourbon cuts through, making this a strong, memorable drink worth a return visit.

This isn’t the kind of place you pop in for some hastily made drinks with an extra shot. Fortunately, Olive or Twist also has a menu of small plates—like boudin egg rolls or cochon de lait sliders—and desserts to keep you satisfied while waiting for an expertly crafted cocktail.
