The Shamlin sisters have no business worrying about reducing the signs of aging, but the fact they’re doing it together should come as no surprise at all.

Fresh-faced women in their early 30s (Kenyatta is 34, Tasha is 33), they recently opened a swanky new medical spa at Towne Center, offering the latest medical techniques to fight the effects of aging. And just as they’ve done for as long as they can remember, they’re doing it together.

As a child Kenyatta wanted to be an educator. “I’d teach baby dolls,” she recalls. Adds Tasha, “And I’d have to help you.”

A mere 15 months apart, their parents essentially raised them as twins. On Kenyatta’s first day of kindergarten—and away from her little sister— she promptly melted down. Tasha was summoned as a comforter, but quickly proved herself bright enough to stay. The two remained permanent classmates.

They excelled at Baton Rouge Magnet High School, and after a high school summer of research at Pennington Biomedical Center, the sisters resolved to become doctors.

They attended LSU together, then Baylor Medical School, where they specialized in internal medicine and pediatrics. They even “couple matched,” a process usually reserved for married med students that lets them seek post-med school training at the same hospital.

Wanting to return to Baton Rouge to serve their community, the sisters spent six months searching for the perfect local jobs. It proved challenging since they requested to be hired—you guessed it—together.

Eventually they landed positions with Baton Rouge Family Medical Center, where they still practice today. But now the Shamlins and a third partner spend a few days a week treating patients at their new Medical Spa.

They still manage to spend precious leisure time together traveling, shopping and dining.

But can they envision a time when they’ll ever work apart? Their response may not offer a clear answer, but it’s certainly revealing.

“No,” Tasha says decisively.

Kenyatta adds, “We never know what God has in store for us, though.”

Tasha, with an almost imperceptible roll of her eyes, responds, “I don’t like that answer.”
