Shut Up and Play The Hits and Summah Jam Y’all!

For fans of music or film or both, tonight presents a one time only opportunity to see an official selection of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival on the big screen in Baton Rouge. When the LCD Soundsystem played their final show together as a group to a packed house at Madison Square Garden in New York City on April 2, 2011, they brought along a film crew and handed out cameras to fans in attendance in order to preserve the performance for posterity. The resulting footage became Shut Up and Play The Hits, a documentary about the event and the band, but more specifically about the wide chasm that exists between rock n’ roll dreams and the realities of being an individual making music for a living (as viewed through the eyes of frontman James Murphy). The film is playing for one night only at selected theaters across the country, including the RAVE Cinema at The Mall of Louisiana at 7:30 PM this Wednesday, July 18. See the official trailer below, and tickets can be purchased online here.

This Saturday, American Thrift presents their musical interpretation of a summertime family block party at Summah Jam Y’all!. This show is chock full of local talent, featuring six of the state’s talented young singer-songwriters in the spacious yet intimate Artspace Perkins, a venue that provides not only great acoustics but also a casual atmosphere that is family friendly and extremely conducive to the social aspect of seeing live music performance. The bill features Kristin Diable, Clay Parker, Jodi James, Liam Catchings, Sean Bruce, and the triumphant return of recently relocated native son Jacob Zachary. Each artist will perform five songs, including four of their own original compositions and one by genre juggling alternative rock giant Beck for good measure. Several of the areas food truck vendors will also be in attendance, and families are welcome (kids under 12 admitted free). Adult tickets are only $8 in advance and are available here.
