Angelina Jolie stars as a wicked witch in a new live action film from Disney. Jolie plays the title character who is driven to curse an infant princess (Elle Fanning of Super 8). However, the princess might be the only one who can bring peace to the kingdom. If the story sounds familiar to Sleeping Beauty, fans that’s because the film is based on the fairy tale, but it shifts the perspective a little bit like the popular Broadway production Wicked. Sharlto Copley (District 9) and Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises) also star. Robert Stromberg, a two-time Oscar-winning visual effects veteran who has worked on films such as Life of Pi and The Hunger Games, makes his directorial debut. Competition at this weekend’s box office is fierce with X-Men: Days of Future Past still riding high and Seth McFarlane’s latest comedy making its debut. This needs to be a hit for Disney, which took a huge hit with its last two live action blockbusters John Carter and The Lone Ranger. Disney still doesn’t mind spending money — Maleficent‘s budget is around $200 million. Rated PG. View the trailer below.
