Wally Pfister, the cinematographer for Christopher Nolan, makes his directorial debut with the help of Johnny Depp in Thursday’s Transcendence. Depp stars as terminally ill scientist Dr. Will Caster who uploads his mind to a computer and becomes more powerful than imagined. Like Nolan, Pfister has an incredible cast at his disposal, including Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy, Morgan Freeman and Kate Mara. Also like Nolan’s non-Batman films, Transcendence is not a franchise blockbuster. Instead, Pfister’s debut is a thought-provoking piece on technology’s modern muscle. Read Jeff Roedel’s preview.
