Everyone’s hiding something in the new thriller featuring characters created by the late great Tom Clancy. Chris Pine stars as the title character in this weekend’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Pine is the fourth actor—Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck took turns before him—to play Ryan, an American spy who has difficulty balancing family and work. In this franchise reboot, Kenneth Branagh directs Ryan’s origin story as the agent uncovers a Russian plot to crash the United States economy. Branagh also plays the film’s villain, Viktor Cherevin. Kevin Costner, whose stock has grown as of late thanks to winning turns in Man of Steel and the TV miniseries Hatfields & McCoys, also co-stars. Though reviews haven’t crept in just yet, Shadow Recruit could signal the start of a new trend—good movies in the usually slow month of January. Rated PG-13. Check out the trailer below.
