Runway to Real Way: Windowpane
Windowpane print has been everywhere these last few seasons and, according to the latest runway shows, it isn’t going away any time soon! This geometric print is bolder than stripes with the potential to be as classic as polka dots. It looks great in any color combination and is easy to work into your current wardrobe if you treat it like a neutral.
My inspiration, from the Kate Spade New York Spring 2014 collection which debuted earlier this week, is windowpane overdrive. You may think that only certain people can pull off the look of an all-over print, but if done correctly, anyone can sport it! The runway look has a more pronounced print while the street wear look has thinner lines, allowing the print to be less in-your-face but still have a similar effect. I like the matchy-matchy situation going on in a full on print in basic colors. To throw a wrench in the outfit, pair it with a flashy pair of loafers to keep a funky menswear vibe. Match your belt to your shoes for a “rule follower” effect and grab a handbag in a contrast color. If you feel self-conscious about wearing a print all over, throw on a jacket that is streamlined and in a neutral shade. This collarless blazer is not the norm but adds a smidge of interest.

Step out of your comfort zone with this print or start out with something small like a fun blouse! But whatever you do, don’t fall through the cracks on this print.
