Royal ‘Glow’

Right before August, Royal Teeth’s lead singer Gary Larsen is enjoying a rare bit of downtime in New Orleans.

Forgive him if he’s speaking softer than usual. The past two years have been filled with incessant national tours and promotion for the south Louisiana band. That roller coaster won’t stop, as Royal Teeth recently released its first full-length album, Glow, on a major label.

Yet, for all the marks the band has earned here, there and everywhere, Larsen and his band mates are still grounded in this hard-working m.o. that’s just as addictive as their pop sounds.

“A lot of things are happening,” Larsen says. “We’ve put a lot of miles on our van and done lots of touring and hard work. We’re a very grounded band, though. We definitely enjoy those moments and don’t take them for granted. We look back at the past year … it has been amazing. I’m shocked how much we’ve grown and moved forward.”

Of those moments Larsen mentions, you can count “Wild” from the band’s 2012 EP Act Naturally popping up all over the place as a big one, as well as the band earning a spot on the mid-major label Dangerbird Records, which houses Silversun Pickups and Butch Walker.

Anyone who has heard the band will note its joyous, adventurous sound. While Glow does include live favorites such as “Stay” and the aforementioned “Wild,” the album also features a few more personal songs.

You can credit that intimate touch to the band’s stay in Toronto during recording sessions. Larsen says the band was able to shine a light on its strengths and some personal themes while being immersed in the cold northern terrain.

“A lot of it is about capturing the moment,” he says. “There’s also a common back and forth on love here. I know that’s a pretty open term, and it can be interpreted in so many ways. It can deal with relationships with your friends, family or significant other. For me, the songs dealt with that roller coaster of those relationships mixed with the message [that you] need to capture the moment with those people.” royalteethmusic.com

Royal Teeth’s new album dropped in August, and the band is currently touring up the East Coast.
