Roundup: Pizza parlor eyes Perkins Hardware … VooDoo BBQ spreads its wings … New Orleans-area restaurant to open downtown
By the slice: Schlittz & Giggles owners Jack Warner and Brandon Landry intend to open a second pizza parlor in the Perkins Road Hardware mixed-use development. While a formal agreement has not yet been reached for the space, Warner says if all goes well, the new 2,000-square-foot location could be open by the end of the year. “We’ve been open in downtown for a little over a year, and it’s been a gangbuster,” Warner says. VooDoo in Houma: The Baton Rouge-based barbecue chain VooDoo BBQ & Grill has sold the rights to open a restaurant in Houma; the 11th location in the state should open by the end of the year. The company plans to open a VooDoo BBQ Express in the Mall of Louisiana food court by August and a Denham Springs franchise will open later this year. Officials are looking at opening restaurants in Lafayette, Shreveport and Lake Charles. Maybe this will stick: Marrero restaurant Wags on the Levee will open by June 15 on Third Street in the building that most recently housed Miller’s, New York Bagel and Café Asia. Wags specializes in “Southern classic” dishes, such as gumbo, fried seafood, crawfish cornbread and stuffed bell peppers, says Colleen Collins, who owns and manages the restaurant along with her fiancee, Nishen Palmer. “Downtown Baton Rouge is growing, and we figure we could bring some good food down there,” says Collins. Plans are for Wags to be open for lunch and dinner until 11 p.m. during the week and until 2:30 a.m. on weekends. The restaurant plans to add a Sunday brunch by August.
