Roundup: Cold weather keeping crawfish small … PieWorks relocating Sherwood restaurant

Mini mudbugs: The cold that’s kept Louisiana residents bundled up this winter has also kept many crawfish too small to trap. Adam Johnson, owner of Bayou Land Seafood in Cecelia, says he’s buying about 80 sacks a week, compared to 100 sacks or more a day at the end of a normal January. Last year’s cold winter made for a late harvest. State climatologist Barry Keim says this winter’s December and January have been, on average, as cold as or colder than the same two months in 2009 and 2010; however, there’s a chance of a break occurring in February.Pie, goodbye (for now): PieWorks by Design, a Shreveport-based pizza chain, has shut down its Sherwood Forest Boulevard location and is looking for a new site. Marc Able, who founded PieWorks, says the Sherwood Forest site wasn’t quite big enough. He’s working on securing a bigger building not too far away. Able couldn’t disclose the site being considered, but says he hopes to sign a deal by the end of the week and open the new spot by the end of the month. “We picked up a lot of loyal customers during our six months in Baton Rouge,” Able says. “We hope to pick up some more with our new location.”
