Round-up: Goodbye, ‘Gourmet’ … Citrus farmers watching insects
‘Gourmet’ gone: Gourmet, the Conde Nast publication which would have celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2011, will cease publication after its November issue this year. The magazine had experienced 50% losses in ad revenue over the course of the year. CEO Chuck Townsend was quoted as saying that Conde Nast would “remain committed to the brand, retaining Gourmet’s book publishing and television programming, and Gourmet recipes on epicurious.com.” Tiny threat: Citrus growers in Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes are keeping their eyes trained for the Asian citrus psyllid. The dangerous insect, which resembles a tiny cicada, can wipe out an entire orchard if not addressed and it has been found in the region. While the insect is a major threat in and of itself, the psyllid does help the spread of citrus greening disease, a plant malady that prevents citrus fruit from ripening and ultimately kills the tree.
