Rock of Ages (in theaters June 15)
The working titles very well may have been Glee: The Movie or Karaoke Cruise, but this Friday’s Broadway musical-turned-coming-of-age comedy Rock of Ages does indeed deliver on its promise of celebrating plenty of hits from the 1980s. Joan Jett, Def Leopard, Journey, Poison and more get airtime in what could be the crest of 1980s nostalgia as Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta star as two Hollywood wannabes of 1987 who fall for each other on the Sunset Strip. A string of stars each get their turn crooning in the mic, from Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin to Russell Brand and Paul Giamatti, but it is Tom Cruise who just might steal the show as superstar rocker Stacee Jaxx, an amalgam of Bret Michaels, Nikki Sixx and Billy Idol.
It’s a light-hearted love-letter to hair band schlock rock, sure to have audiences teasing their bangs and leaving their sleeves at home this weekend. Watch the trailer below:
