River Road Recipes’ 50th anniversary

Tonight, the Junior League celebrates the 50th anniversary of what has become the top-selling community cookbook series in the country, River Road Recipes. At a free event sponsored by the Junior League of Baton Rouge and the Louisiana State Museum, guests will enjoy special pricing on River Road cookbooks, hear the stories behind the book’s original 1959 creation, and be able to visit all museum exhibits. The reception begins at the Louisiana State Museum at 6:30 p.m., with the event to follow at 7 p.m. If you can’t make the event, however, you can still buy the special 50th anniversary re-release of the original book, which celebrates the community cookbook’s “golden” anniversary with a gold-foil cover. It includes all the classic recipes from spinach Madeline to garlic cheese grits, although in larger print, and with some modern substitutions for some ingredients which are hard to find these days.
