‘Rio’ grand
The Social Network’s Jesse Eisenberg plays a timidly neurotic macaw in the new animated adventure comedy Rio, in theaters Friday. As Blu, a domesticated bird that can’t even fly, Eisenberg’s character is shipped from the U.S. to his homeland in Rio de Janeiro to breed in captivity with Anne Hathaway’s equally rare female macaw Jewel. Fiercely independent, Jewel does not warm to Blu, and instead she convinces him to escape with her to the wild, setting this unlikely duo on crazy adventure through one of the most colorful and lively cities in the world. Along the way they run afoul of Nigel, an ill-tempered cockatoo voiced by Jemaine Clement (of Flight of the Conchords), and they must rely on help from some new friends to avoid the wrath of his talons. George Lopez, Leslie Mann and Wanda Sykes co-star with Jamie Foxx and Will.I.Am, who also provide music for the film. Rated. PG.
