Riffs: Todd Teepell, business development consultant – On Fight Club
“I absolutely love film and watch way too much of it. This is why I typically list my Top 5, but if it has to be just one, it would be Fight Club. Now, technically, we aren’t supposed to be talking about this (first and second rule), but perhaps there is an exception. What’s not to like? You pair two brilliant actors—Brad Pitt and Edward Norton—with director David Fincher, present socially unacceptable images about how unacceptable society has become, and the result is a masterpiece. I am magnetized to any film that has a strong social message weaved into its fabric, especially when that message is how society is missing the point, like American Beauty, Life as a House and The Matrix.
‘You’re not your job. You’re not how much money you have in the bank. You’re not the car you drive. You’re not the contents of your wallet…’ This line has resonated with me since the first time I saw Fight Club, and it affects more of my choices in life than I even care to admit. It’s what I love about film. It has become the classic literature of the Internet Generation—the Charles Dickens of the ADD set.”
