“Not too long ago, I caught a good rockumentary, Kurt Cobain: About A Son on the film festival circuit. Afterward, the filmmaker acknowledged he was influenced by Ron Fricke’s mysterious documentary Baraka. Besides being a personal favorite of mine, I think it’s overdue to give Baraka props since it’s a cult classic. Shot on 70mm film across 24 countries, it was no small feat to make. Despite taking on lofty existential themes through a cleverly edited montage of imagery, the film is still really accessible and a pleasure to watch. Go see it in HD. It will amaze you. Now is the time to discover, or re-discover, this marvelous film. The much-anticipated sequel, Samsara, is supposed to be released in 2009.”
