After being the hipster spokesman for nearly every consumer product on the market, Snoop was in danger of losing the edge he once commanded. Fortunately, the time he spent in California setting up the West Coast Peace Summit got him back into the G-Funk groove that brought him to national acclaim in 1993 with Doggystyle. While this album may not be the landmark record Doggystyle was, it is one of the more promising albums of his later career. Snoop pulls in the big names, including Dr Dre on “Boss’ Life” and “Imagine,” also featuring a return of neo-soul maestro D’angelo. Jamie Foxx continues his invasion of all media with his falsetto contribution to “Psst!” and the list goes on and on. The real standout is “Vato” a shout out to the vibrant but undersung Latino hip-hop community featuring Cypress Hill’s B-Real. The perfect summer jam for the cold winter months, this album is a welcome addition to Snoop’s catalog.
