Review: Makin’ Groceries, by Todd-Michael St. Pierre

The lexicon of New Orleans is a strange and wonderful combination of Southern charm and hospitality splashed with a South Bronx accent, where words and phrases run together to create something new and phonetically chaotic.

Phrases like “where y’at,” “dawlin’,” “f’true” are a natural exchange for native New Orleanians, and something author Todd-Michael St. Pierre celebrates in his new book, Makin’ Groceries, a tribute to his hometown, not to mention a nod to a time-honored tradition that’s still alive and well (despite the closure of Schwegmann’s).

In this delightful children’s tale, Nicky and his maw-maw need ingredients to make red beans and rice. It’s Monday, after all, so they head to the French Market for fresh produce before heading to Salvadore’s Grocery. They stop off at a sno-ball stand along their journey and enjoy a tasty treat.

Beautifully illustrated by Baton Rouge artist Lee Brandt Randall and written in St. Pierre’s singsong style, this book is infectious. Children of all ages will enjoy this culinary tale, and adults will find delight in the illustrations. And there are a few hidden gems, such as a sign at the grocery store advertising alligator pears (avocados to non-New Orleanians).

St. Pierre, now a resident of Austin, remains a Louisiana boy at heart and has dedicated a portion of the proceeds from his book to the New Orleans Public Library Rebuilding Project. louisianaboy.com
