Restaurant review: The Londoner

Founded in Dallas by Barry Tate, a former SoHo produce market owner who just wanted to give traditional English food a jolly good name, The Londoner Pub & Grill arrived in Baton Rouge last fall in the competitive restaurant corridor near Coursey and Sherwood Forest boulevards. Bringing English dishes to a character-rich culinary hotbed like Louisiana may be analogous to playing an NFL football game in Brazil. But in offering 32 beers on tap—including Ireland’s oldest ale, the ruby red Smithwicks—and classic plates like Bangers & Mash and Shepherds Pie, Tate is giving it the old university try. A patio deck, dark wood beams, classic art and pub mirrors straight from the U.K. set the tone, while the English menu branches out to embrace modern American tastes. The British would call this being agreeable. Click here to see if 225’s secret diners do, indeed, agree.
