‘Rango’ star

Johnny Depp may not have had the opportunity to complete his role as Don Quixote in director Terry Gilliam’s ill-fated adaptation, but he gets another change this Friday to play another character that lets his wild imagination run away with him in the animated comedy Rango. As the titular chameleon, Depp comically imagines himself as a daredevilish hero, but his mettle is tested when he stumbles upon a remote frontier town that is overrun by bandits and needs his help. Forced to assume the role he has played in his head for years, Rango becomes sheriff and initiates a plan to save the town once and for all. Abigail Breslin, Isla Fisher, Bill Nighy and Stephen Root also lend their voices to this fun-for-all-ages comedic adventure in the Wild West. Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski directs. Rated PG.
