Rad travels (DC) – What my experience was like in D.C. and what I will be doing in New York.
Pictured right: The glorious National Gallery, Washington D.C.
Peeps have been asking me to write about what my experience was like in D.C. and what I will be doing in New York. So here it is, dope readers.
I got the opportunity to work under the beautiful and brilliant Amy Kuhnert in D.C. this summer as an intern, dabbling in the business side of the art industry. Amy Kuhnert, of Murphy Kuhnert Art Consulting, is an art appraiser and consultant, so her business varies from working directly with interior designers and design firms to select artwork for an entire building or a private residence, to finding a value for private art collections or individual pieces. The first month of living in D.C. consisted of house sitting for the Kuhnerts while they were out of town on a family vacation. They have a sweet home in the middle of Georgetown, a young and trendy area of D.C. My only consistent assignment for this was to water their plants. Somehow, I still managed to kill one.

Aside from that, exploring Georgetown was pretty dope. The Heiner Gallery and DTR Modern Gallery were my favorite art scenes. I did a lot of touristy things when my besticles sans testicles would come visit and stay with me, which locals kind of frown upon but I highly recommend it to anyone planning on visiting D.C. This ABSOLUTELY EXCLUDES D.C. Cupcakes, which tourists are obsessed with and wait in an absurdly lengthy line in the blistering sun just to go inside this small establishment that sells a very average cupcake. I can’t really wrap my mind around that obsession.
The tourist activities I did partake in included visiting all of the museums and monuments around the Smithsonian. Nothing will make you feel more American. You can’t miss the Newseum, especially the 9/11 and JFK exhibits. Super important. Also the White House has a legit sniper pacing the roof, whom I like to call Snipey McSniperstein. So if you haven’t seen that in person, it’s quite the spectacle and totally legit. You MUST see the National Gallery, beautiful architecture and big time historic artwork to feast your eyes upon. My favorite monument is obvi Abe, where I cried when I went to visit with a friend and saw that some heinous un-American human had thrown bright green paint all over him. I later found out that homeslice had also defaced several other monuments and landmarks in the area, and literally got caught green handed and deported back to China. The nerve, man.
As far as restaurants go, Brasserie Beck was hands down my fave. They had separate beer and wine menus which were both novels, and suuuuper dank food. I recommend the mussels, which you can get prepared in several different ways, and defffff the pork shoulder sandwich. Nom city. Nom STATE. As far as the night scene goes, Adam’s Morgan and U-Street were my favorite areas to go out. Wild, wild nights, I tell you. Madam’s Organ in Adam’s Morgan (lol get it?) is a sweet 3-story venue with usually live music on the first floor and second floor, then the rooftop bar is a nice little breather with lots of bar stools to bro out on. U-Street is a weird scene, which is why it was one of my fave scenes. I ended up at some cray dubstep show in some cray dubsteppy venue with some cray friend of mine and was so out of place in my long dress and clutch, but had seriously the best time sitting at the bar that served mostly water (because drugs) and just watching these wompers exist. I really thought that they were a dying breed but they are in FULL FORCE on U-Street, I assure you.
Georgetown wasn’t really my place at night, though I ended up at Town Hall with friends on several occasions, which I found to be stuffy and overrated. The peeps there are like “Yo, I’m a yo-pro and I work on the hill, can you tell by my suit that I’m still wearing 5 hours after I got off work?” Then those same silly peeps go to Smith Point later to latenight and yawn and talk about politics while I’m at Five Guys across the street venturing out with a hotdog or grilled cheese to be non-mainstream. This is not recommended and speaking of burgers, Z Burger up Wisconsin by the strip club (lol) is better than Five Guys hands down. George, in Georgetown, is on the other hand very fun on their “event” nights, but other than those nights you usually have to be on a list to get in, and I have to say that the “list” nights aren’t worth the wait in line. Any who, hit up D.C. because it’s the cap and it’s dope and it’s American.
As I write this I’m on a train to New York, wishing it was the locomotive from Lil’ Dope. So… HMU (hit me up) with those comments and TBC (to be continued) next week! Cheers friendly friends and h8rs alike!
