Puppy-palooza at Camp Bow Wow

This Sunday, Baton Rouge celebrates National Puppy Day with a puppy-palooza at Camp Bow Wow.

The upscale doggy day care and boarding and training facility located at 7195 Pecue Lane hosts an adoption event featuring an estimated 60 puppies from Friends of the Animals Baton Rouge, Capital Area Animal Welfare Society, Companion Animal Alliance, SOS, Hokie’s Hounds and America’s Dog Rescue. The event starts at noon.

“Puppy season runs from February until August,” Companion Animal Alliance Assistant Director Paula Shaw says. “During those months, an average of 40 puppies are housed at the shelter on any given day.

We encourage adopters to always check the shelter first [before considering commercial breeders]. They are usually shocked at the variety of sizes, colors and breeds we have.”

Since Camp Bow Wow is the national sponsor for the event, it’s no surprise its largest franchise location—which has a capacity of 185 canines for boarding and doggy day care—would hold a big puppy promotion.

“We certainly want to see these puppies in loving, forever homes,” Camp Bow Wow owner Drew Detlefs says. “But, just as importantly, we want to raise awareness about the dangers of buying puppy mills and the great dogs and puppies available from rescue.”
