‘Piranha’ are a tricky species

Richard Dreyfuss cameos in Piranha 3D, an over-the-top thriller comedy ode to the original Piranha, itself a rip-off of the landmark summer blockbuster Jaws. The film is new in stores this week and follows a group of sun-soaked co-eds who fall victim to an aggressive flesh-eating pack of prehistoric fish after an underwater earthquake sets them free to feast. It’s a no-brainer tale of survival with several sequences thriving on the 3D experience and a host of recognizable faces from Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, Elizabeth Shue, New up-and-coming stars like Human Giant’s Paul Scheer and Gossip Girl’s Jessica Szohr. Rated R.
