Pie, oh my: BR’s pizza revolution

You might think pizza would feature prominently in a college town. But few could have predicted the pizza sector in Baton Rouge would explode as it has this year. A handful of pizzerias once dominated the market, but a wave of new eateries has now entered, each with its own twist. The pie rush has created a range of noshing opportunities for slice lovers. New restaurants to hit the area in the last few months include Oscar’s Ice Cream and Pizza Joint, Red Zeppelin, PieWorks Pizza by Design from Shreveport, Hungry Howie’s, and a second, larger location for Schlittz & Giggles. Coming soon is New Orleans-based Naked Pizza, which is in the midst of a national expansion. Even quotidian spots like Little Caesar’s and Papa Murphy’s take-and-bake have expanded recently in Baton Rouge, as restaurateurs continue to find local diners a promising target.
