On the Road: The Tomato Head, Knoxville, Tenn.
Are you caravanning up to Tennessee this Saturday to watch the Tigers play? Once the tailgating is over and the grill is packed away, why not relax at one of Knoxville’s best-reviewed restaurants after the victory? The Tomato Head is a pizza restaurant that prides itself on using only the freshest veggies and herbs and hand-making dough, sauce, desserts and more every day. Inspired by a visit to New Orleans, owner Mahasti Vafaie originally envisioned the restaurant as a French bistro. However, a pizza oven left behind by previous tenants prompted her to change tack, and The Tomato Head now thrives in Knoxville’s Market Square as a specialty pizza and sandwich eatery. Ingredients are organic and locally sourced where possible, and surprise combinations occur, like black beans, andouille sausage and baked tofu, or smoked salmon and pesto. 12 Market Sq., Knoxville, Tenn., (865) 637-4067, thetomatohead.com
