Oh, Yappy Day – Yelp!BR hosts Yappy Halloween 5K this Sunday

If you were a dog owner in another state, you could probably survive a lifetime without ever owning a dog costume. This isn’t the case in southern Louisiana.

There are plenty of occasions to show off your mutt from CAA’s Fur Ball to CAAWS’ Krewe of Mutts.

You could even make a case for adding to your canine couture collection this weekend.

YelpBR! hosts the Yappy Halloween Spooky 5K and One-Mile Stroll at Town Sqaure at North Boulevard this Sunday, starting at noon. Rain or shine, this year’s event features adoptable dogs as well as a kids’ zone, music, photo booth and treats for kids and canines alike. The event also includes local vendors of pet services and products such as Marsh Dog!, 12 Paws Bakery and the Pet Nanny.

Last year’s Yappy Halloween Run attracted 300 participants and raised $2,400. Yelp!BR Fundraising Coordinator Beverly Theriot says 2013 registration and sponsorships have already outpaced last year’s count.

And, why not? It’s a good time benefitting a great cause.

While Yelp! will be taking to the streets this weekend, volunteers and dogs will soon have a second showcase at the brand new Petco at Perkins Road and Acadian Thruway, which is scheduled to open in mid-October.

Among the cute canines available for adoption at YelpBR! are the following:

Romeo is a middle-aged golden retriever mix.

Princess is a five-year-old female beagle. She loves attention and is a loving companion.

Ponji is a young, small male terrier mix.

Maisie a six-year-old female, Boston terrier. She is loving and playful, but she is best suited to being an only pet.

Ralphie is schnauzer/Cairn terrier.

Cinnamon came into rescue with puppies, who have all been adopted. Now it’s mama’s turn. Cinnamon is pretty calm, but she can get pretty animated when it’s time to play. Cinnamon is housebroken and gets along well with all types of people. She is best suited to be an only dog.

These great dogs have all been vaccinated, spayed/neutered, microchipped and heartworm tested.
