‘Nowhere,’ man
John Lennon’s turbulent teens come to roaring, rock’n’roll life on DVD this week with the U.S. release of Nowhere Boy. Set in Liverpool, England in the 1950s and based on a memoir by Lennon’s half-sister Julia Baird, this coming of age drama is filled with new versions of some of the earliest songs The Beatles played and follows Lennon’s troubled schooling, his home life torn between a wild, truant mother, absentee father and the doting aunt who cares for him and encourages him the best she can. To Lennon, his salvation is found in music. After seeing Elvis in a movie, he wants to be the next superstar, and forms a modest local band. Things are rough and tumble but begin looking up when he recruits a young guitarist named Paul McCartney and his friend George Harrison.
