Not what the doctor ordered – Flick Pick for Feburary

When Steven Soderbergh opens the box on a genre, he doesn’t exactly play by the rules. The same director who brought a 1970s European pulse to his revenge thriller Haywire and giddy Billy Wilder-worthy overtones to the true-life whistle-blower tale The Informant! is sure to have a trick up his sleeve with Side Effects.

Billed as a crime thriller, the film features The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara as a young wife hooked on prescription pills and Jude Law as the doctor who may be criminally complicit in her addiction.

As Mara’s first lead role, it is a litmus test for her longevity. Can she break out of the Dragon mold? With this, his last new film in theaters before a self-imposed retirement (his Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra will arrive on HBO next year), can Soderbergh come full circle and deliver a big message picture that is also hugely entertaining?

Side Effects arrives Feb. 8.

FEB. 8: Jason Bateman in Identity Thief
