New Miss USA talks Baton Rouge

When Miss Nevada Nia Sanchez accepted the crown of Miss USA Sunday, she was in shock and overjoyed.

“I couldn’t believe it was happening to me,” she says. “I wanted to cry out of pure joy and happiness.”

Now that she’s had time to settle down, Sanchez spoke with 225 about her time in Baton Rouge. All 51 contestants spent two weeks in the Capital City, visiting attractions and enjoying a night out downtown.

Sanchez had been to Baton Rouge one time before the competition for a taekwondo tournament around 10 years ago, she says. However, she was unable to explore the city like she did this time around.

“It was cool to go back and do a beauty pageant,” she says. “I love history, and it was great to see all the history of Baton Rouge. We were able to go to [a] plantation and the Old Governor’s Mansion. There was so much we got to see. Everyone was so nice. It felt good.”

Sanchez says her favorite aspect of touring the city was “meeting the ghost” in the Old State Capitol. She also enjoyed the area’s food.

“I ate so much,” she says. “My favorite was alligator. I never thought I would try something like that and it would be quite scrumptious.”
