New ‘Heart’
In stores this week is Paper Heart, the semi-realist, unscripted docu-comedy from underground comedienne Charlyne Yi. On a sincere quest to find the meaning of true love—something she doesn’t believe in to begin with—Yi and her film crew canvass the country talking to everyone from perfect strangers to fellow comedians like Jack Black, Bill Hader, Demetri Martin and Seth Rogen. Along the way she meets Michael Cera, and fictional scenes of this unlikely pair’s budding friendship and romance are interspersed with the rest of the documentary footage. The line between documentary and drama blurs as Yi’s relationship with Cera becomes a cornerstone of the last act of her film and threatens to give her all the answers about love for which she wasn’t really looking. Nicholas Jasenovec, the mastermind behind the hilarious cult hit short film, Sounds Good to Me: Remastering the Sting, directs.
