My Style: Supriya Jindal, First Lady of Louisiana
-
With a degree in chemical engineering and an MBA on her resume, Supriya Jindal isn’t exactly your average political spouse. She’s also currently the second youngest first lady in the nation, is launching a foundation for children’s math and science education this spring and—oh by the way—stays pretty busy mothering three young children. We found out she still has time to maintain a style all her own—and that there’s no big secret behind that beautiful hair.
Most people imagine your life over the last two years as being insanely busy and hectic. What do you do to stay fit? Reduce stress?
I try to exercise every day. Some days it happens, some days it doesn’t. I exercise here [at the governor’s mansion] with some free weights and a bike I brought from our house in Kenner.

What is a beauty tip you live by religiously?
Moisturize! I use all different kinds, currently Oil of Olay.
Can you share your hair-care procedure?
Procedure? Just shampoo and conditioner … no special kind. I use anything. Some days I use a flat iron, some days I use a curling iron, some days I just blow dry. I just kind of go with the flow.
Heels or tennis shoes?
Flats. I’m usually in flats in the backyard with my kids.
Dress or jeans?
Usually in jeans with the kids.
What’s Gov. Jindal’s favorite thing that you wear?
He’s such a gentleman—he always tells me I look nice in everything.
What designer will you always dress in?
Whatever’s on sale. I shop at the local department stores, the outlet mall, TJ Maxx …
What’s your favorite beauty product?
MAC lip conditioner. I use it regularly.
What’s a beauty secret your mother taught you?
She always told me to moisturize—she’d put face cream on before doing anything else.
What is your everyday must-have that we will always find in your purse??
Sippy cups.
Do you believe in plastic surgery?
It’s not something I believe in for myself … but ask me again in 15 years.
What is a health tip you live by religiously?
Drink lots of water, eat healthy. Fruits, veggies, brown rice. The kids love vegetables. My daughter has a vegetable garden … she loves cauliflower, my son loves carrots.
Do you have a home remedy you could share?
Vaseline on my cuticles, though I don’t do it as often as I should. Also, running after three kids under 7.
Do you buy clothes for your husband? Does he take your fashion advice?
I try to. He’s a guy—he’d probably wear the same thing over and over again if I didn’t step in.
