Codes and Keys. Does the world need another Death Cab for Cutie album? Based on the surprisingly rocking sounds from 2008’s epic Narrow Stairs, this introspective, often fey group still has some cards up its sleeves. New album Codes and Keys is no exception, as the band puts down its guitars and embraces keyboards and electronics more like the Postal Service than ever before but still spins out fuzz bass thumpers like lead single “You Are a Tourist.”
FOMO. New Zealand singer-songwriter and preternatural show-off Liam Finn once again plays every instrument on this, his sophomore album and first solo release in three years after a string of cool collaborations. Liam, the son of popular musician Neil Finn of Crowded House, gives us a record that wiggles with smartly layered pop harmonies and playful arrangements, recalling the Beatles-leaning pop of Jon Brion and late period Elliott Smith.
