Music: Best Bets

With 40 gold and platinum records under his belt, Don McLean has had a successful career as a singer-songwriter. Of course, the 68-year-old performer is most known for the epic classic “American Pie,” listed as No. 5 on the Recording Industry Association of America’s Songs of the Century. That track is also the longest song ever to reach No. 1 on the charts—its 8:36 running time was split across both sides of the single when it was released in 1971 (which is why you sometimes hear shorter versions on the radio).

In 2012, PBS aired a documentary on McLean with interviews from the songwriter and others; a companion double CD featured studio and live recordings from throughout his career.

McLean still performs regularly, and a summer tour brings him to the River Center’s Performing Arts Theatre Aug. 22. brrivercenter.com
