Muffuletta Shack opens on Perkins

The Bare Bean coffee shop on Perkins Road has shuttered, to be replaced by a new venture, the Muffuletta Shack. A joint venture by former Yvette Bonnano’s Catering employee Heather Villerete and Café DuJour owner Christine Bajon, the Shack, as Villerete describes it, was created around the concept of “gourmet fast food.” “We wanted to do a few things and do them really well,” she explains. The staples on the menu are mainly the eponymous muffulettas, made with fresh New Orleans bread, as well as a variety of other sandwiches, like barbecue brisket, roasted veggie, and meatball and marinara. They also serve up several kinds of salads, along with a hearty cup of chicken and sausage gumbo. The menu may be small, owing to the tight space in the already-storied bright green shack, but the fare is tasty and fresh-made, and Villerete says that the response has been great thus far. “We’re like a food truck without the wheels. People see ‘muffuletta’ and they pull right over.”
