Movie Trivia – How well do you know the movies that were made in your own backyard?
While filming at Celtic Media Centre, Tom Cruise celebrated his 50th birthday, and daughter Suri celebrated her 5th, receiving a batch of designer cupcakes delivered to their Baton Rouge home by family friends the Beckhams.
Production designers for the film’s futuristic city modeled several buildings central to the plot on downtown’s Shaw Center for the Arts. The film’s star, Saoirse Ronan, had to drop her Irish accent for an American one. “We had the Louisiana accent as well, that was new—I hadn’t done that before. We were in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, so I was surrounded by that accent all the time,” she said during a press junket.
While the movie was still filming in the Capital City, star Kristen Stewart had to rush to Los Angeles to receive a People’s Choice Award. During her acceptance speech, Stewart mentioned the continued filming of the movie series, saying, “It’s always surreal to be at places like this, but I was a vampire this morning in Baton Rouge, so it’s really weird.”

Star Michele Rodriguez was a fan of Spanish Moon’s weekly ’80s dance nights hosted by DJ Bird. She was spotted there regularly while the film was shooting in Baton Rouge in 2009. She also DJed the film’s wrap party at Chelsea’s Cafe in December of that year.
Hilary Swank investigates a small town stricken by the 10 biblical plagues in this film. Interestingly, production was delayed because of Hurricane Katrina. 225 interviewed Swank on the set of the film for our very first issue.
Patricia Clarkson co-starred in the film, which was shot in and around Baton Rouge, alongside Sean Penn, Kate Winslet and many others. The Oscar- and Emmy-nominated actor is a New Orleans native and daughter of New Orleans city councilmember Jackie Clarkson. She had read Robert Penn Warren’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book while a freshman at LSU.
The real Sister Helen Prejean has a cameo in the movie, appearing in a candlelight vigil scene outside the prison.
Director Steven Soderbergh was the first American to receive the Palme d’Or in nine years for this film, and at 26, he was the youngest Cannes Film Festival winner ever. The film was made in B.R. for just $1.2 million.
